Welcome, my name is Bobby Newell, and I started
recycling about 60 years ago. My dad, Glenn Newell, had worked for his
brother Alton S. Newell in San Antonio, TX at Newell Salvage. They had
several falling out's in their long history of working together, but
they never lasted long. Back to my story, in the summer of 1957 my dad
bought a new Chevrolet pickup, and went from business to business
buying junk radiators and batteries to recycle. I went with him and
when he stopped at a service station or auto repair shop, I would
always talk the manager into giving me old tire inner tubes. I would
separate the tubes into two groups, natural rubber (red) and synthetic
(black). I would sell them to my uncle for 5 cents / pound for the
natural and 1 cent / pound for synthetic. |
